DC Grid Research: The Technology Foundation for High Performance Electronic Circuit Breakers

Munich, Germany, February 14, 2017 - A German research team explores the technological basis for reducing energy consumption in power grids and electrical installations by more than half. This can be achieved by using direct current (DC). DC can reduce power consumption compared to the alternating current (AC) used today. Five project partners from business and academia studied a fully electronic semiconductor-based circuit breaker that can be used in future DC grids and applications. Such circuit breakers will support the use of DC in any application that uses AC today. .

The new circuit breaker can be as fast as possible safely connected to DC, and power outage in an emergency situation. They can more efficiently incorporate electricity from renewable sources into grids and energy storage devices and improve grid stability. With DC, you can also create more compact electrical installations. Heads of research teams from Infineon Technologies AG worked with Airbus, ETA Elektrotechnische Apparate GmbH, Siemens AG and the University of Bremen Electric Drives Power Electronics Institute (IALB) to develop circuit breakers. The European Power Electronics Center (ECPE) provides further support. ECPE is headquartered in Nuremberg, Germany.

In the past, due to the lack of an economical and efficient circuit breaker technology, it is impossible to convert the distribution network and circuit board network that support power driven traffic into direct current. The only available electromechanical circuit breakers available today are at risk of arc discharge when switching DC current and voltage. In addition, they are slow to respond, heavy, clumsy and expensive.

In addition, project partners are exploring innovative semiconductor components such as overcurrent blocking field effect transistors (OCB-FETs). New semiconductor components and new switching topologies use new design structures and connection technologies for testing. The research team designed the demonstration product for this project, which covers the aviation on-board power grid, electric traffic and photovoltaics and supports the DC distribution network.

NEST-DC partner's research mission

In this project, IALB is responsible for the research and simulation of new semiconductor structures for OCB-FETs, static and dynamic measurements of newly developed circuit breakers and testing of thermal performance and destruction limits. Airbus is responsible for defining the requirements of the airline industry and developing solutions that are implemented and proven with NEST-DC partners.

Siemens focuses on the circuit breaker structure and connection technology. ETA Elektrotechnische Apparate clarifies the requirements of industrial applications and, together with partners, validates circuit breakers up to 1500 V. Infineon contributed power semiconductor expertise and conducted research around power semiconductors for OCB-FETs.

About NEST-DC

NEST-DC is the German abbreviation for "Innovative Electronic DC Circuit Breakers for Renewable Energy and Automotive Power Networks." Research partners invested approximately 4.5 million euros during the project. The project was launched in October 2013 for three years. The goal set by the German government is to improve the efficiency of electricity with innovative power electronics. The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) funded multidisciplinary research and development around the theme of "Power Electronics for Energy Efficiency Enhancement" under the ICT 2020 Framework Program. NEST-DC received about 2.1 million euros from BMBF for financial support.
