According to a report released on October 19, the owner of Eco Concept and English-born Chinese Li Qu agreed on Thursday to acquire LDV, a British manufacturer of light commercial vehicles. Specific financial terms have not been announced.
Eco Concept Company stated that LDV will still focus on the production of light commercial vehicles in the future, but the scale of production will be reduced. Li Qu said that this acquisition has been supported by many international auto manufacturers and distributors. In the future, LDV will probably focus on China-related businesses.
Li Qu was an investment advisor to the British Phoenix Group. When Phoenix Holdings’ Rover Motors faced a bankruptcy takeover, SAIC and Brilliance had joined the ranks of the purchaser of this foreign investment with her efforts. SAIC Motor finally acquired Rover Motors.
Previously there were reports that Li Qu had a close relationship with a large Chinese car company, and the car company was very interested in LDV's highly respected Maxus truck brand. It seems that the car company is likely to be SAIC.
If SAIC's acquisition is successful, SAIC may locally manufacture and sell light commercial vehicles in the UK. According to another report, LDV is still developing an electric version of the Maxus model, but it requires further investment to achieve mass production.
The LDV Group previously belonged to the Russian automotive manufacturer GAZ Group and currently employs approximately 800 people. After the British government's application for 40 million pounds was rejected, the company has recently fallen into crisis. Afterwards, the company had tried to negotiate a deal with Weststar, Malaysia, but eventually ended in failure. At present, the LDV Group is managed by an administrative agency designated by the British government.
