Maersk pushes new fuel conversion initiatives

The global economic recovery and the recovery of the shipping industry from the crisis have made the world shipping industry more demanding for green and low carbon. Since the beginning of the 21st century, the development of green shipping has gradually become the consensus of the industry. From the initial elimination of single-shell tankers, to the new coating specifications afterwards, to fuel-saving emission reductions, the international shipping industry continues to be at the forefront of other industries on the green and low-carbon roads.

A few days ago, Maersk Line, the global leader in shipping, took the lead in implementing fuel conversion in Hong Kong, which made the shipping industry take another step towards the green road.

Low sulfur fuel leads green new concept

At the beginning of September, Maersk’s ships docked in Hong Kong, China, implemented fuel conversion, using low-sulfur fuel instead of ordinary fuel on the engine. Mr. Shi Minfu, chief executive of Maersk Line North Asia, said that this will significantly reduce the emission of sulfur from the air and help improve the air quality in Hong Kong. The move will increase Maersk Line's annual cost by $1 million.

According to Mr. Shi Minfu, shipping can effectively reduce carbon dioxide emissions compared to other modes of transportation, but it is not so simple to deal with sulfur oxide emissions. By voluntarily implementing fuel switching in Hong Kong and elsewhere, we want to prove that the measures do not have any technical difficulties and can reduce sulfur emissions very quickly. We support the strict control of sulfur emission regulations and hope that the fuel conversion measures we implement will encourage Hong Kong authorities to raise the regulatory threshold for sulfur emissions.

According to the reporter, Maersk Line has docked about 850 times a year in Hong Kong. Implementing fuel conversion measures to replace common fuels used in the open sea with fuels with lower sulfur content can reduce emissions of at least 80% of sulfur oxides and particulate matter harmful to human health. Previously, Maersk Line had experience in fuel conversion in California, Houston and many other locations.

For this reason, when the Hong Kong NGO Civic Exchange Policy Research Institute and the Hong Kong environmental department discussed the possibility of fuel conversion in Hong Kong, Maersk quickly took action. This makes Hong Kong a step away from a cleaner shipping.

Domestic shipping is still based on "low speed"

Compared with the international shipping companies' leading in the green concept field, the Chinese shipping industry has different opinions and mixed opinions. The reporter learned through many parties that the main emission reduction strategies adopted by China's two major shipping groups, COSCO and China Shipping, are still “slow down the navigation and reduce fuel consumption”.

Insiders of COSCO Shipping told reporters: "The Group has been implementing low-speed shipping for one year, and achieved good results during this period. In the first half of this year, the company's new container capacity increased by 10% year-on-year, about 43,000 TEUs, but This year, it saved 25,000 tons of fuel consumption. This is a big number to reduce shipping carbon emissions."

The relevant person in charge of China Shipping Group said: "Low-speed operation is currently the main energy-saving and emission-reduction method for domestic shipping companies, and the use of low-sulfur fuel is not currently included in the company's plan."

From the current point of view, the use of low-sulfur fuel by many large domestic shipping companies has not yet been put on the agenda. Although the $1 million/year expenditure is negligible for shipping companies, the voluntary principle of the company makes shipping companies not very concerned.

In this regard, some senior analysts in the shipping industry said: "From the perspective of the world shipping development trend, the green and low-carbon road is like the historical wheel, which is irreversible. However, at this stage, green shipping is only a stop. In the stage of corporate social responsibility and corporate image, it is far from the sustainable development of shipping companies, and it is not related to the survival of shipping companies. Therefore, green shipping has not formed a mechanism binding force both at home and abroad. The road to green shipping will remain long."

However, the person also pointed out: "Green shipping is conducive to changing the values of the shipping industry. In the future, it will become the core competitiveness of the shipping industry. Chinese shipping companies need to start early and speed up the green concept."
