The 14th China International Chemical Fiber Conference was held in Xiaoshan District, Hangzhou, from 12th to 13th. Zheng Zhiyi, president of the China Chemical Fiber Industry Association, said that in recent years, China’s chemical fiber industry has achieved significant technical progress and its industrial structure has achieved remarkable results.
Zheng Zhiyi said that the technological advancement of China's chemical fiber industry is comprehensive, which is reflected in the significant improvement in process design, engineering design, equipment level, process monitoring, and management level. Taking polyester filament, which accounts for 55% of chemical fiber, as an example, processing costs per unit of product have fallen by about half in ten years, energy consumption in operating costs has also dropped by about half, and the number of workers per 10,000 tons of products has been reduced from 150 to 60 people. At present, the proportion of differentiated and functionalized fibers in China's chemical fiber products has increased significantly. The industry-wide differential rate has reached 37.7%, which is 6.2 percentage points higher than in 2005.
Technological progress has improved the competitiveness of China's chemical fiber industry. In 2007, the export volume of chemical fiber in China exceeded the import volume for the first time, and the annual net export volume was 433,100 tons. The downstream chemical fiber textiles exports totaled 3.796 million tons, an increase of 10.2% year-on-year, and the total export value reached 16.86 billion USD, a year-on-year increase of 18.4%. The increase in export value is higher than the increase in export volume, which shows that the added value of China's chemical fiber textiles exports has increased significantly.
From the perspective of industrial structure, the proportion of high-quality assets in the industry has increased to 70%, and the concentration of production capacity to large companies, markets, and private enterprises is basically in place. By the end of 2007, there were 11 chemical companies with an annual output of more than 50,000 tons, with a total capacity of 206.5 million tons, accounting for more than 80% of the total production capacity. The eastern production capacity was 22,950,000 tons, which accounted for 89.2% of the total production capacity. The two provinces were in Jiangsu and Zhejiang. The capacity is 17.132 million tons, which accounts for two-thirds of the total production capacity. The capacity of private enterprises also exceeds two-thirds of the total production capacity. At present, there are 29 listed companies in the national chemical fiber industry and 14 have entered the process to prepare for listing.
Zheng Zhiyi also stated that although China's chemical fiber industry has made localization, technological progress, and economic scale in recent years, it has absorbed the pressure of rising raw material costs brought about by rising oil prices. However, at present, under the circumstances that raw material costs account for 87% of the industry's production costs and high oil prices, the Chinese chemical fiber industry's ability to continue to absorb the pressure of oil prices and transmit downstream cost pressures has weakened. He said that regardless of whether the high crude oil prices will last long, China's chemical fiber industry will continue to take the road of technological progress and rely on product differentiation and functionalization to maintain its competitiveness.
