Alcohol is not a good sleep aid

A study found that drinking alcohol before sleep increases the brain's forehead alpha power, a development associated with sleep. Drinking alcohol before people go to bed, alcohol is initially used as a sedative, through the Delta Frequency Electroencephalography (EEG) activity Slow Wave Sleep (SWS), but is later associated with sleep disruption. Christian L. Nicholas from the University of Melbourne, Australia, said: "People usually tend to focus on alcohol reported on sedation properties, which is reflected in falling asleep in a short time, especially in adults, not sleep disruption, which occurs late in the night." In this study, the research team recruited 24 participants, healthy 18 to 21-year-old social drinkers who consumed less than 7 bottles of standard drinks per week for the past 30 days.
Each participant received two conditions: sleeping alcohol on time, and placebo, followed by standard polysomnography (a study of uncertainty for sleep) and a comprehensive electroencephalogram. Alcohol significantly increased the forehead alpha power and the results showed. Nicholas said: "The good news here is that alcohol is not actually a particularly good sleep aid, although it may seem to help you fall asleep faster. In fact, the quality of sleep has been dramatically changed and destroyed."
