The Lighting Research Center (LRC, Lighting Research Center) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has published a report to help guide the airport to choose LED lighting for different needs.
The new report is titled "LED Airport Lighting Use Announcement: ACRP Integration 35 (IssueswithuseofLEDairfieldlighting: ACRPsynthesis35)", published by LRC at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The report points out that the use of LED lighting at airports, the airport benefits the most to reduce maintenance costs. The second is energy saving, in part because the design of the airport power system is an incandescent lighting system.
The Transportation Research Council (TRB) of the National Academies and the Airport Cooperative Research Program (ACRP, the sponsor of the research funding) jointly published a report by the LRC author.
LRC has long worked with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to explore the application of solid-state lighting (SSL) technology in airports. John Bullough, senior research scientist and visiting professor at LRC and author of the report, said that airport LED lighting is more energy efficient than incandescent lighting, but the airport power system is dedicated to incandescent lamps rather than LED lights. If the power system is designed with more LED lines, it can save more energy. The report also found that the visibility and performance of airport LED lighting is also very good.
In the early days of developing LED lighting, there were problems with SSL and airport compatibility, but these problems have been solved. The report is based on detailed information from 22 airports and aviation agencies. The report pointed out that despite the high cost of pre-payment, the installation of LED lighting will recover higher costs in a few years. Upgrading the power infrastructure can increase the level of energy savings and the reliability of the airport lighting system. According to LRC news, the FAA is currently investigating new infrastructure for airport lighting.
